Job Description:   This vacancy is located in the Foodborne, Vectorborne and Zoonotic Diseases Unit of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention and Control (IDEPC) Division. Specifically, the position will focus on Vectorborne Diseases.

Responsibilities include:
Provide epidemiologic assistance with the Emerging Infections Program TickNET underreporting study, a surveillance project assessing the underreporting of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases in Minnesota. This person will also assist with the development of other TickNET studies including efforts to determine the illness burden of tick-borne diseases in Minnesota residents.

Provide epidemiologic assistance to the Vector-Borne Disease Epidemiologist Supervisor and Epidemiologist Senior(s) with the completion of several vector-borne disease surveillance projects.

Provide epidemiologic assistance to the Vector-Borne Disease Epidemiologist Supervisor and Epidemiologist Senior(s) with epidemiologic investigations of environmental and human factors associated with transmission of vector-borne diseases.

Provide technical assistance on the epidemiology, prevention and control of vector-borne diseases to health-care providers and the general public.

Support the general functions of the Acute Disease Investigation and Control Section and Food-borne, Vector-borne, and Zoonotic Diseases Unit.
Minimum Qualifications:   Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Microbiology, Epidemiology, or closely related public health field AND
One year of professional experience with responsibility for providing difficult or complex consultation, training, planning, research or investigative assistance within a health program/field.


Master's degree in Public Health, Microbiology, Epidemiology, or closely related public health field.


Completion of Master's degree coursework with pending completion of Master's project/thesis.

Required Coursework for all candidates:
Successful completion of a minimum of 4 graduate quarter credits or 3 graduate semester credits in each of the following two areas: Epidemiology and Statistics. Candidates must provide evidence of course completion prior to consideration for employment.

Preferred Qualifications:   Understanding of the clinical and epidemiological aspects of vector-borne disease, including modes of transmission, factors affecting diseases, occurrence, and strategies for intervention, prevention, and treatment.

Knowledge of the principals of epidemiology so as to conduct epidemiological studies and maintain disease surveillance systems.

Knowledge of biostatistics and ability to maintain surveillance systems, database development, data analysis and interpretations.

Experience in conducting Minnesota Department of Health passive surveillance for TickNet pathogens, including contacting health care providers for information on reported cases, interviewing cases regarding illness and exposure information, and entering resulting data into surveillance databases.

Experience conducting investigations of epidemic and endemic infectious diseases.

Ability to instruct and advise the medical community and the public on methods of disease control and prevention.

Knowledge of the method(s) of disease control and prevention.

Ability to write and prepare grants and manuscripts for publication and reports.

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relations with co-workers, and health care and other professionals.

Knowledge of personal computers including computer programming using standard statistical and database management software such as Epi Info, dBase, FoxPro, Access, or SAS.

Ability to be self-directed in conducting studies, investigations, interviews, and evaluate the need for, willingness and ability to work evening and weekend hours, if necessary.

Ability to provide guidance and direction to personnel, including student workers, assisting with epidemiological studies and investigations.
