This position is located in the Public Health Laboratory in the Minnesota Department of Health.
This position analyzes environmental samples using techniques and instrumentation appropriate for inorganic chemistry analysis and provides analytical results to clientele so that potentially hazardous situations are detected, monitored, and corrected in order to ensure and protect the public health and quality of the environment.
Bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, or physical sciences.
Two years of professional experience analyzing samples in one or more areas of environmental analysis.
A Master?s degree in chemical, biological, or physical sciences will count as one year of professional experience.
A minimum of 16 semester/24 quarter college credits in chemistry. Applicants must provide evidence of course completion prior to employment.
Must successfully pass a background check.
Knowledge of the chemical theories and principles used in the analytical procedures performed in the laboratory.
Knowledge of environmental measurement sciences.
Knowledge of the health effects and toxicity of environmental contaminants.
Knowledge of basic college math and practical statistics as applied to measurement techniques.
Ability to follow complex oral and written directions and to use formulas and charts.
Communication skills ? verbal, written and interpersonal.
Time management skills.
Ability to perform special sampling techniques required for trace metal analysis.
Ability to operate sophisticated instrumentation, such as atomic emission, atomic absorption and UV-VIS spectrophotometers for extended periods of time.
Technical skills and detailed knowledge of PC-based analytical equipment for data reduction and information management.
Ability to identify and eliminate errors in analytical procedures and solve design problems in development of new procedures.
