Job Description:   This position is located in the Case Mix Review Section of the Compliance Monitoring Division.

The position will provide audits of a percentage of residents in certified long-term care facilities for coding accuracy of MDS assessment forms and resulting Case Mix classifications. The position will provide surveillance and guidance to certified nursing and boarding care home providers using nursing and health related knowledge based upon compliance with State and Federal laws and rules which are directly related to the CMR Audit process. This position requires knowledge of MDS 3.0 coding and scheduling.

Applicants must be available for regular overnight travel. The need for overnight travel is determined by the audit workload. The work hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The opportunity for a flex schedule exists following orientation. Orientation hours may vary based on the flex schedule(s) of trainer and mentors.

This position requires the ability to lift/carry and load/unload a laptop computer and reference materials for use during on-site audits. The position requires periods of standing and walking in order to interview residents, families, and staff.
Minimum Qualifications:   Must possess a current Minnesota licensure as a Registered Nurse.

Two years of professional experience as a registered nurse in a health care setting with primary responsibility for assessing nursing and health needs and experience with documenting and writing of reports. Experience must include evidence of documentation, report writing or equivalent and must be clearly stated on your resume to receive credit.

A Master's degree in Nursing, Public Health, Health Care Administration, Psychology, Social Work, Medical Field, Adult Education or closely related may be substituted for one year of the above experience; a Bachelor's degree in one of the above areas may be substituted for six months of the above experience.


Three years of professional experience as a registered nurse in a health care setting.

Experience conducting internal quality assurance activities.

Requires a Class D Driver's License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the a gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications:   Two years of experience as a Federal Surveyor or OHFC Investigator with SMQT qualification.

Experience conducting internal quality assurance activities.

Experience in completing the MDS 3.0 assessment.

Experience working in a federally certified nursing or boarding care home.

Training in completing the MDS 3.0 assessment.

Ability to apply nursing and health knowledge and clinical expertise to the review of MDS assessments.

Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to the Resident Assessment Instrument process and Minnesota Case Mix.

Oral communications skills sufficient to interview staff, residents, and families.

Critical thinking skills sufficient to collect and analyze information and make decisions based on evidence gathered.

Listening skills sufficient to ascertain level of compliance for MDS coding.

Interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships, inform providers of inaccurate coding and other pertinent findings.

Computer skills sufficient to document findings and enter data into web-based application used for audit purposes.
