This position is located in the Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) Suveillance Unit of the Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) Section within the Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention and Control (IDEPC) Division.
This position exists to coordinate statewide surveillance activities for vaccine-preventable diseases, focusing on hospitalized influenza cases. Responsibilities include collecting, summarizing, and disseminating epidemiologic data; coordinating outbreak investigations and implementing control measures; conducting special studies; providing epidemiologic consultation for health care providers, other professionals, and the general public; developing and disseminating information and standard recommendations regarding the epidemiology, prevention and control of vaccine-preventable diseases; and supporting the general functions of the VPD Section and the IDEPC Division.
- Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Microbiology, Epidemiology, or closely related public health field AND
Two years experience as an Epidemiologist, which includes responsibility for designing and conducting a variety of investigations of acute and/or chronic diseases or related professional experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Microbiology, Epidemiology, or closely related public health field, AND
Three years professional experience with responsibility for providing difficult or complex consultation, training, planning, research, or investigative assistance within a health program/field.
A Master's degree in the above fields will count as:
- One year of Epidemiologist experience as described above
- Eighteen (18) months of professional experience in a health program/field as described above.
Required Coursework for all candidates:
Successful completion of a minimum of 4 graduate quarter credits or 3 graduate semester credits in each of the following two areas: Epidemiology and Statistics. Candidates must provide evidence of course completion prior to consideration for employment.
Applicants must also provide proof on completion of Master's degree (coursework and project/thesis).
Requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes and heavy hand tools or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. Even though the weights being lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with a degree of pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
Master's degree with graduate school-level training in epidemiology and biostatistics/statistics (at least six quarter credits each).
Previous experience facilitating and monitoring a disease surveillance system, especially in the context of influenza and other vaccine preventable diseases.
Previous experience in communicating and collaborating with local public health regarding changes in vaccine preventable disease reporting requirements, trends, outbreak response and guidelines.
Ability to determine work priorities, and accurately assess workload capacity and progress.
Experience working with and maintaining data in the Minnesota Electronic Disease Surveillance System (MEDSS) and other study specific databases. This includes facilitating training on electronic reporting tools, encouraging reporting sources to maintain a consistent and high level of reporting, abstracting information from medical and laboratory records, periodically examining surveillance and study data for data quality trends over time, and summarizing surveillance data in written reports.
Familiarity with data management and the ability to provide guidance and direction to data entry personnel and others assisting with the collection, entry, editing, cleaning and preliminary analysis of data.
Knowledge of computer software applications including office software (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint); database management software (Access, Oracle); and statistical software (SAS, STATA, SPSS, or EPI-INFO). Ability to troubleshoot new software and unfamiliar file types.
Verbal communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to accurately convey medical and technical information with health professionals, other professionals and the general public; and ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and create linkages among public health personnel at all levels.
