Job Description:   This position is located in the Public Health Laboratory Division, Inorganic Chemistry Unit of the Minnesota Department of Health.

This position is responsible for analyzing environmental samples using techniques and instrumentation appropriate for microbiology and inorganic chemistry analysis. This position also provides analytical results to clientele so that potentially hazardous situations are detected, monitored and corrected in order to ensure and protect the public health and quality of the environment.

Responsibilities include:
Perform standard chemical and microbiological analyses on environmental samples.
Participate in quality assurance activities, enter data, report results, assist in review and revision of methods and procedures.
Perform miscellaneous tasks, including calibrating and troubleshooting equipment, updating knowledge of analytical techniques and instrumentation, and practicing good laboratory safety.
Minimum Qualifications:   Bachelor?s degree in a chemical, biological, physical, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology field.

A minimum of 60 semester/90 quarter college credits that includes either:
1) 24 semester/36 quarter credits in medical laboratory technology; or
2) 24 semester/36 quarter credits of science courses that include six semester/nine quarter credits in chemistry; six semester/nine quarter credits in biology; and 12 semester/18 quarter hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
Applicants must provide evidence of course completion prior to employment.

Must successfully pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:   Knowledge of the chemical theories and principles used in the analytical procedures performed in the laboratory.

Knowledge of the health effects and toxicity of environmental contaminants.

Knowledge of college math and practical statistics as applied to measurement techniques.

Ability to follow complex oral and written directions and to use formulas and charts.

Communication skills: verbal, written and interpersonal.

Time management skills.

Ability to operate sophisticated instrumentation, such as Lachat autoanalyzer, and UV-VIS spectrophotometers for extended periods of time.

Computer skills in operating instruments, data manipulation, and data presentation.
