Job Description:   This position is located in the Public Health Laboratory.

This position provides validated molecular diagnostic tests for the BioWatch Program as part of the Laboratory Response Network (LRN). In addition, this position will perform a variety of other rapid methods (time-resolved flouresence and bio-plex) in the Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit; perform other LRN protocols; assist Clinical Microbiology units in performing molecular diagnostic tests including polymerase chain reaction, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and other molecular biological or conventional methods; and perform a variety of tasks to support the Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit. This position's primary responsibility is daily (365 days a year) analysis of the BioWatch samples, followed by LRN molecular diagnostic protocols.
Minimum Qualifications:   Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or a related field;
Two years of professional diagnostic testing experience in a clinical microbiology or immunology laboratory.

A Master?s degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or a related field will count as one year of professional experience described above.

Successful completion of a minimum of five semester/seven quarter college credits in microbiology, immunology, or related subjects. Applicants must provide evidence of course completion prior to employment.

Must successfully pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:   Knowledge of the principles and practices of bacteriology, serology, parasitology, mycology or virology.

Knowledge of the sources of clinical and other specimens and the ability to correlate such knowledge with the performance of laboratory procedures.

Knowledge of the use and standardization of complex and sophisticated laboratory equipment.

Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of professional and technical methods and procedures.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions, formulae and charts.

Experience or background in molecular biological methods, with an emphasis on detection and characterization of infectious disease agents.

Proficiency in real-time polymerase chain reaction.

Good communication, organization, and documentation skills.
