This position is located in the Source Water Protection Unit of the Environmental Health Division.
The position is responsible for supervisory work in hydrology, hydraulics, geohydrology, geochemistry, groundwater protection, and water resources management. This position will supervise activities within the Source Water Protection Unit related to delineating wellhead protection areas, assessing the vulnerability of public water supplies, assisting public water suppliers with implementing source water protection plans, evaluating existing and proposed programmatic activities of the source water protection unit, and supporting the source water protection grant program. This position provides support to the Supervisor of the Source Water Protection Unit regarding:
Daily supervision of staff hydrologists;
Coordination of local, state and federal agencies with delineations and vulnerability assessments;
Preparation of reports summarizing the activities of Unit staff;
Development and implementation of data bases;
Development of annual budgets and work plans; and
Coordination of other unit staff and staff from other department programs with wellhead protection and source water assessment activities.
Must be licensed to practice as a geoscientist by the State of Minnesota.
Two years of experience as a supervisor or leadworker, directing the work of others, coordinating activities related to one or more water resource projects or programs of moderate size and complexity.
Three years advanced professional project management experience with geologic mapping, groundwater investigations, and development of databases for storing and retrieving geologic and geochemical information.
Master's degree in Hydrology or equivalent will count as one year professional experience.
Knowledge of the principles of hydrology, hydraulics, geohydrology, geochemistry, and groundwater quality protection.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of land use planning, groundwater protection, and land use controls.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of water resources management, groundwater quality protection and water-well construction.
Ability to supervise the work of others, coordinate activities related to one or more water resource projects or programs of moderate size and complexity.
Experience using computer software to model groundwater flow.
Ability to review and evaluate technical reports and prepare summaries of this information for use by non-technical staff.
Ability to organize and incorporate material from diverse sources into a report of local groundwater conditions and the ability to write and edit such reports.
Requires occasionally lifting heavy articles and lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools, field equipment or sampling materials. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
Requires a Class D Driver's License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the a gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.
Experience with, or knowledge of, the technical and policy considerations concerning the delineation of wellhead protection areas and writing wellhead protection plans.
Ability to organize and lead technical and advisory workgroups.
Knowledge of federal and state agency programs regarding groundwater and geological research.
