This is a Temporary Full-Time position. Anticipated dates are from April 25 through October 22, 2012. Hours and days of work will vary and include evenings, weekends and holidays.
This Area Naturalist position will be located at Lake Bronson State Park, to provide interpretation and outreach education at the park and provide outreach to seven Scientific and Natural Areas. It will seek citizen partnership opportunities with key communities. It is responsible for identifying and interpreting the natural, scientific, historical and recreational aspects of these facilities and the area. This involves developing, implementing, publicizing and updating of interpretive plans as well as non-personal interpretive applications and developing environmental education curriculum and opportunities in partnership with schools. This position also works with the Regional Naturalist to develop non-personal interpretive products, especially those using digital technology.
-Develop interpretive themes, objectives, content and procedures for interpretive activities.
-Develop and present activities to a variety of audiences using interpretive techniques.
-Research, produce, maintain and evaluate non-personal interpretive materials, especially using emerging technology such as touch screens, mp3 players, etc.
-Perform administrative functions so that interpretive services are provided and documented.
-Operate and schedule maintenance on all interpretive facilities/equipment.
-Contribute to local environmental educational efforts by offering teacher education workshops and programs for schools.
-Serve as technical resource for local community, park visitors and staff by providing information about area and park resources.
-Discuss and exchange information on park operations, interpretive services and resource management issues with park management team.
-Recommend and administer the interpretive services budget, purchase goods, prepare specifications and secure bids.
-Participate in the development of park unit interpretive plans and park management plans.
-Publicize and promote the park interpretive activities and special resources.
-Train, schedule, supervise and evaluate interns and volunteers.
-Cooperate with other park staff on the enforcing park rules and providing emergency response.
To be considered, applicants must meet the following requirements:
1) Bachelor's degree in one of the physical sciences such as ecology, zoology, botany, geology, OR a cultural resource-focused degree such as American history, anthropology, archeology, OR parks and recreation management OR the equivalent, AND
2) One full year of professional experience that includes responsibilities for developing and conducting natural and/or cultural resource interpretive programs and services.
Additional Requirements include the following:
Advanced oral communication skills to present information on environmental and cultural values, facts and theories, in a clear and understandable manner to diverse individuals and groups.
Writing/grammar/spelling skills sufficient to develop materials, compile reports and write interesting and educational newspaper articles, publications and information for use in electronic media.
Advanced human relations skills.
Experience in public speaking, interpersonal communication, interpretation or education.
Understanding of interpretive techniques including the ability to assess audiences and the effectiveness of interpretive media.
Skills in historical, cultural and natural resource research and literature search techniques.
Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 50-pound bags of feed maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
Requires a Class D Driver's License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the a gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.
Knowledge of park operations, rules, policies and facilities.
Experience in creating non-personal interpretation using digital technology.
Familiarity with Minnesota's natural and cultural resource heritage and stories.
Skill in developing interpretive exhibits and displays.
Understanding of educational curriculum and materials in order to develop activities for K-12 students, assess the effectiveness of these activities and train others to use the park for education.
Illustration and/or photography skills.
Supervisory or leadership experience.
Computer software skills (MS Office, database management, GIS, desktop publishing, photoshop, and other electronic media development tools.)
Knowledge of GIS/GPS technology and data.
