Job Description:   This position is located in the Public Health Laboratory Division.

This position will perform investigative work to ensure enforcement of occupational health and safety standards.

Responsibilities include:

Develop safety policies and procedures for handling infectious agents, unknown environmental samples, chemicals and other potentially hazardous materials, and routine training of employees to ensure awareness of potential hazards and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements pertaining to safety.

Oversee the maintenance and proper use of the biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) facility.

Inspect the laboratory to detect health hazards by observing the work environment, interviewing employees, and comparing findings to established occupational health and safety standards.

Determine corrective and preventive actions to ensure the safety of laboratory staff and visitors.

Oversee the disposal of hazardous chemical and biological waste.

Oversee the laboratory Occupational Health and Safety Plan and ensure that staff have access to adequate personal protective equipment and medical monitoring.

Train staff on chemical and biological hazards and safety and security precautions.

Ensure proper maintenance of laboratory safety equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:   Master's degree in Public Health, Industrial Hygiene, or Environmental Health (with an Occupational Health or Industrial Hygiene emphasis) or a related field AND two years professional experience as a safety officer or health officer for a scientific, environmental or regulatory health and/or safety enforcement program.


Bachelor's degree in Engineering or in a relevant Physical, Natural, or Biological Science field AND three years experience as described above.

A certificate in Industrial Hygiene will substitute for one year of professional experience.

Must successfully pass a background check.
Requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. Even though the weights being lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time.
Preferred Qualifications:   Knowledge of the following academic disciplines: industrial hygiene, toxicology, microbiology, environmental health, mathematics, and statistics.

Knowledge of safety risks sufficient to anticipate when a hazardous condition could occur in the laboratory that could cause an adverse health effect on a laboratory worker.

Knowledge of safety, risk management, risk communications, regulations, infectious agents, analytical chemistry, radiation chemistry, and hazardous wastes.

Proficiency with standard office practices.

Competency in written and oral communications, judgment, integrity, diplomacy, critical thinking, and problem solving.

Ability to write narrative technical reports and safety policies and procedures that are clear and understood by the target audience.

Ability to make accurate and sound assessments while evaluating workplace health and safety.
