This position is located in the Public Health Laboratory/Newborn Screening Laboratory at the Minnesota Department of Health. This position requires working occasional Saturdays and holidays to provide newborn screening.
This is a professional lead newborn screening analyst. The Newborn Screening Program screens dried blood spot specimens from all newborns in Minnesota for heritable and congenital disorders. The screening program provides timely, efficient laboratory screening to prevent or minimize the long-term effects of disorders that can lead to death, developmental disability, or other serious medical conditions in newborns.
Perform routine dried blood spot preparation and laboratory analysis for congenital and heritable disorders in accordance with the Clinical Lab Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) principles and practices, and laboratory standard operating procedures. Work in a team environment and lead the work of others.
Analyze screening data and interpret infant specimen results using established standard operating procedures, knowledge, and judgement gained from newborn screening experience. Apply quality control protocols to determine accuracy, acceptability and quality of the data. Process electronic data from laboratory instruments and report screening results in the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and to other program personnel through Quickr collaborative software. Perform a high level review of abnormal screening test results prior to reporting.
Maintain laboratory instrumentation and equipment; assess reagent, consumable, and assay kit inventories; order supplies; and perform standard instrument calibrations using laboratory standard operating procedures.
Research, develop and implement new testing procedures and instrumentation for additional disorders added to the screening panel. Initiate and carry out projects to improve laboratory operations using recommendations from other staff and observations based on own laboratory experience.
Troubleshoot and communicate instrument repair needs, assay problems and data issues to the laboratory supervisor. Investigate laboratory problems and document the issues and corrective action plans.
Conduct competency assessments and train less experienced analysts to assure accurate data and instrument maintenance using own expertise and experience. Coordinate the laboratory's participation in CDC's Newborn Screening and Quality Assurance Program (NSQAP).
Perform other duties related to this position as assigned. Increase job knowledge and familiarity with infant diseases detectable by screening to continuously improve the quality of the Newborn Screening Program.
Bachelor?s degree in a chemical, biological, physical, or clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a related field;
Three years of professional laboratory experience testing newborn dried blood spot specimens for heritable and congenital disorders.
A Master?s degree in one of the above will count as one year of professional experience.
Applicants must have a minimum of 60 semester/90 quarter college hours that includes either:
1) 24 semester/36 quarter hours in medical laboratory technology; or
2) 24 semester/36 quarter hours of science courses that includes a) six semester/nine quarter hours in chemistry; b) six semester/nine quarter hours in biology; and c) 12 semester/18 quarter hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination. Applicants must provide evidence of course completion prior to employment.
Applicants must successfully pass a background check.
Knowledge of chemical, biochemical, molecular biology, and/or clinical laboratory procedures and the ability to share expertise with less experienced analysts.
Knowledge of college mathematics, algebra and practical statistics and the ability to apply them to high complexity measurement techniques.
Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) principles and practices.
Ability to follow complex oral and written directions and to use formulas and charts.
Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Good time management and multi-tasking skills.
Ability to operate, maintain and troubleshoot sophisticated PC-based analytical instrumentation.
Technical skills and familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMs).
Ability to design, carry out and coordinate projects and laboratory work in newborn screening.
