Job Description:   This position is located in the Microbiology Unit of the Public Health Laboratory Division.

This position performs laboratory testing activities related to the Emerging Pathogens Program (EIP) and Foodborne Disease initiatives, Mycobacterium spp. testing as part of the MDH and CDC Tuberculosis Control Programs, and Active Bacterial Core Surveillance (ABC?s) testing. In addition the position will provide general microbiology laboratory testing support.

Responsibilities include:
Detects, isolates and identifies pathogenic enteric bacteria, mycobacteria, and other pathogenic bacteria, as well as parasites using microscopic, biochemical, serological, and molecular procedures.
Records and reports laboratory findings of specimens and isolates tested. Notifies relevant partners and submitters of significant findings.
Participates in quality assurance, laboratory evaluation and proficiency testing activities.
Performs tests for identification, confirmation, serotyping and storage of invasive organisms as specified by the ABCs program, which includes maintaining expertise in Streptococcus pneumoniae capsular serotyping, Group A and B streptococci, Staphylococcus aureus identification, and others as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications:   Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or a related field;
Two years of professional diagnostic testing experience in a clinical microbiology or immunology laboratory.

A Master's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or a related field will count as one year of professional experience described above.

Successful completion of a minimum of five semester/seven quarter college credits in microbiology, immunology, or related subjects. Applicants must provide evidence of course completion prior to employment.

Must successfully pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:   Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or equivalent (MT, CLS).

Current, relevant clincal diagnostic laboratory experience in bacteriology, parasitology, and mycology.

Knowledge of CLIA (or equivalent) rules and regulations.

Experience with molecular biology methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing.

Ability to perform specific laboratory techniques including examination of specimens using classic microbiology tecniques to isolate and identify pathogenic organisms or the examination of blood for detection of parasites or other diseases.

Familiarity with and ability to use computers, microscopes, centrifuges, biological safety cabinets and molecular detection equipment.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proficient at Microsoft Word and Excel.

Meets and adheres to the personnel reliability and other requirements of the CDC Select Agent Program.
